Monroe - Three Orange County lawmakers
have sent a scathing letter to County Executive Edward Diana
over what they characterize as a long series of transgressions
by the Village of Kiryas Joel, the latest being the
unauthorized walkway on County Route 44.
The wooden
walkway was constructed by the village over a 30-foot slope
opposite the roadway’s guardrail without county
authorization.
Two weeks ago, the county closed Route
44 between Seven Springs Road and Mountain Road in the Town of
Monroe , saying the construction of the walkway was dangerous
and could undermine the guardrail and create a hazard.
Motorists are directed to detour a considerable distance
around the closed section.
Legislators Greg Townsend
(R-7), Frank Fornario (R-5) and Roxanne Donnery (D-14) argued
in a letter to Diana this week: “This transgression is only
one in a long series perpetuated by the Village of Kiryas Joel
beginning with illegal sewer hookups, illegal drilling of
wells, and the destruction of county property and the
subsequent illegal installation of a fire hydrant on county
property.” They recommend:
The village be
fined $1,000 per day, with all remediation costs paid by the
village and deducted from all future sales tax payments unless
restitution is made.
The sidewalk remain closed until
all work is completed by the county.
Diana has stated
the village would be fined $1,000 daily if the problems were
not corrected within three days. That was approximately two
weeks ago.
