Legislative Update: Volume 16
1. Cultural Diversity – September 15th through October 15th has been recognized as National Hispanic Heritage Month. American’s are encouraged to celebrate our diversity as one of the great strengths of our nation. Hispanic Americans have enriched the American way of life through their love of family, sense of community and unity.
2. Public Safety – The Orange County Legislature recently agreed to accept a grant in the amount of $46,510.00 from the New York State Division of Criminal Justice Services to recruit and retain prosecutors.
3. Public Safety – The New York State Senate recently offered a grant in the amount of $20,000 to provide funding for equipment for the Orange County Sheriff’s Office.
Health Alert – Orange County Health commissioner, Jean M. Hudson recently announced that a grant has been offered in the amount of $33,443.00 for the Arthropod Borne Disease Program (Lyme).
4. Domestic Violence – Orange County designated October as Domestic Violence Awareness Month: The Orange County Legislature recognizes the invaluable work performed by the Orange County Coalition Against Domestic Violence and Safe Homes. These organizations together provide assistance to families torn apart by domestic violence as well prevention education activities in the Orange County community.
5. The Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration has offered a grant in the amount of 1 million dollars for the Child Mental Health Initiative: Systems of Care Program. This is the first of a six-year cooperative agreement for additional federal funding benefiting mental health service delivery system for children with severe emotional disturbance & their families.
